Iran World Cup Squad Granted US Visas Just Days Before Los Angeles Opener

Iran’s national team have finally received their United States visas just ten days before their opening World Cup fixture in Los Angeles, according to a White House official who confirmed the news to Reuters on Friday. The late approval brings an end to days of uncertainty that had threatened to overshadow the squad’s tournament preparations.

The visa delay had forced Iran to relocate their training base from Arizona to Mexico whilst awaiting clearance to enter the US. As recently as Thursday evening, Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, confirmed the squad were still waiting for approval, before the visas were granted overnight.

The situation had cast doubt over Iran’s participation in their opening fixture, with the ongoing political tensions between Washington and Tehran creating logistical complications for the team’s World Cup campaign. The breakthrough now allows the Iranian squad to finalise their preparations on American soil ahead of the tournament.

Iran’s participation in matches held on US territory had become a diplomatic talking point, with the visa issue highlighting the complex relationship between sport and politics at international level. The resolution will come as a relief to FIFA and tournament organisers, who can now proceed with fixtures as scheduled.
